Surface thatch builds upon every lawn, it is a natural part of the lawn cycle. The problem occurs when the thatch begins to suffocate the grass plant.
Thatch is made up of dead or living organic matter and when left unchecked, will build up to a point where the oxygen, moisture and nutrients can no longer reach the root zone.
It also lays a perfect base for moss to thrive. By removing thatch from your lawn, moss will have less chance to develop, air movement and sunlight will have a better chance at strengthening the grass plant, and our treatments will be far more effective.
You will notice an additional benefit of thatch removal when mowing your lawn too. Because of greater air circulation, your mower will be able to operate more efficiently.
There are several ways in which to determine whether your lawn needs scarifying. On lawns with heavy thatch you can feel the spongy layer as you walk across your lawn, often you can see the yellow/brown layer of dead organic material when you mow your lawn, but the best way to check is to take a core sample.
This will be done when we visit your lawn. Taking core samples allows us to see all the way to the root zone and enables us to identify whether you have open or matted thatch.
We can then recommend the best way to alleviate it.
Beautiful lawns need scarification which should be part of a regular treatment programme and for best results should be done every year.
Scarification can sometimes be confused with lawn raking. Although a lawn rake can be effective on the moss in your lawn, it as little to no impact on the cause of the moss, thatch.
This is where our professional lawn scarifier comes in. We use the Camon LS42. With its 30 free-swinging blades, it makes short work of thatch, while being as gentle to the grass plant as possible.
Scarification removes large amounts of waste from your lawn, and unlike many lawn care companies, we are happy to dispose of this for you.
We aim to carry out this treatment at the optimal time of year, spring and autumn, to ensure your lawn recovers as quickly as possible.
The intention is not to remove all the thatch in one treatment as this would prove harmful to your lawn. This will help reduce the chances of disease and other problems affecting the grass plant.
